Title: Oslo, Norway, 30 August 1994 This video exists in both PAL (European except France) and NTSC (American) video formats. The NTSC version which I have was converted fairly well, except that when the camera is moved quickly or something fast happens, the picture tends to shear a little. The problem is minor, and exists because the show was filmed in PAL at 25 frames a second and was converted to NTSC at 30 frames per second. Setlist: Standard non-DSOTM show opening with Astronomy Domine, and Marooned as the second encore. This is one of the two times that Marooned has ever been played twice. This has only ever occurred in Oslo, Norway, as a protest against the killing of whales for food. Position: Distant, from left-hand side of stage and on an embankment above most of the audience. Length: 155 minutes. Estimated, since my video does not count time correctly when playing NTSC tapes. Comments: This is a great video, and the copy I have is very sharp and clear with very few dropouts. The show starts during the day, and as night falls the effects become better and better until the last song, Run Like Hell, where the distance of the camera-operator becomes an advantage as the spectacular visual effects of the entire stage, and the lasers can be seen. There is also a spectacular shot of the mirror-ball during Comfortably Numb, where you can see almost the entire crowd underneath it. The camera-work is fairly stable in most parts of the video, although the zoom-ins are quite blurry because of the distances involved. You don't get to see much of the individual band members, but the special effects are very well recorded. There are several shots of Mr. Screen which are clear, fairly stable, and do not suffer from flicker. The crowd is quite well behaved, crowd noise being largely restricted to clapping along to a couple of the songs. For the first couple of minutes, there is a girl standing in front of the camera but she gets out of the way. There is otherwise-unseen footage of whales displayed when Marooned is played, which also has some great guitar whale-sounds from David Gilmour, which play on the improvisational nature of the song. Sound quality: Ex- to Ex. By boosting the bass of this recording by about 25 decibels, and a few judicious boosts in the midrange area, I have gotten Ex+ sound from my copy. Otherwise you just tend to hear the lead guitar and keyboards. A lot of the 'feel' of the instruments is lost unless the midrange is boosted. All in all, there is very little about the sound quality that cannot be easily fixed. The sound is a lot better than many videos I have seen that sound terrible because of the use of the built-in microphone, which is designed to exclude distant sounds. -HAMISH ------------ I have confirmed the date as 30 August 1994.
