Comments: It seems like it's been awhile since there's been a release from the Autumn 1971 tour of North America. This is a complete show, including the tune-ups between songs, which helps give the listener a more realistic listening experience . Of my (currently) nine live versions of Fat Old Sun (I'd like to have more), this is the only one that includes the bells in the opening, though Heart Of The Sun includes a quick bell toll or two before the song kicks in. Fat Old Sun is the full version, as opposed to the abbreviated version (only one verse before the jam) they occasionally played The overall tempo of the show is somewhat aggressive, though not as much as Obscurity (which I think is very aggressive). Dave has another good laughing attack during Cymbaline. The recording is decent, though slightly muffled. I think the problem is not due to the recording itself, but the hall acoustics.

During the tune ups, the band is very clear. You can also clearly hear the two guys who recorded the show (they do not interfere with the music at all). However, once they all kick in, the hall acoustics seem to interfere with the clarity of the recording (though it may sound great if you're there). The only other negative thing is what sounds like a speed problem. Somewhere between the echo section of Echoes and the last verse, the speed seems to have increased. It is most noticeable when Gilmour and Wright sing. It sounds like they hit the helium tanks and drank a little too much coffee. The problem continues for the rest of Echoes and all of Saucerful. Again, the speed problem is most noticeable during the vocal section at the end of the song, making Dave sound a little like a chipmunk. During the section where the drums sort of roll over the chaos of the rest of the band, Nick seems to be drumming really quickly. Technically, I am not sure what is causing the problem. Whatever it is, though, has the effect of the music being played too quickly by the stereo. Who knows, maybe it is just my copy. The end result is roughly 20 minutes of music that can be hard to enjoy.

Fortunately, I am not a major fan of Saucerful (though it would have been nice if it happened to One Of These Days instead). Overall, I like the disc and am glad I got it. Then again, I practically drool over the 1970-1971 shows. The sound is passable and the performance is very good. If you like the Autumn 1971 shows and are willing to put up with some flaws with your boots, you may want to pick it up, though there are better shows from that tour available. -Scott
